The North West Department of Social Development is yet to establish the cause of the fire that engulfed the two offices on the first floor of the Provident House building on Monday night.

The four-storey building houses employees for both departments of social development, employment and labour.

Social Development’s acting head, Obakeng Mongale, said the fire started in one office and spread to the other on Monday at around 21h00 in the evening.

“Security officers who were on duty tried to quell the fire and called the emergency fire and rescue department for assistance. The firefighters responded within a very short space of time after being called to the scene. No injuries were reported.

“We want to commend the Mahikeng Fire and rescue department for acting speedily to save the whole building from the blaze. We also like to commend our security guards for alerting the emergency services on time about this incident,” Mongale said.

He said the west wing of Provident House has been cordoned off to allow investigations to take place to ascertain the cause of the fire, and called on employees whose workstations are affected by the incident to remain calm and work remotely starting from Tuesday.
