NW 2025 Farmer’s Day Commemoration calls for strengthened collaboration

Partnership, innovation, and farmer wellness took centre stage at the 2025 Farmer’s Day commemoration held on Palmietfontein Farm in Ventersdorp, North West.

The event — hosted by the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) — brought together farmers and key industry stakeholders, including Land Care South Africa and the Agricultural Research Council.

In addition to agricultural development, organisers emphasised health education, with farmers receiving guidance on HIV and other communicable diseases to promote regular testing and workplace wellness across the sector.

DARD also led vital discussions on land access, title deeds, and land ownership processes, addressing a longstanding hurdle for emerging and small-scale farmers seeking to expand operations.

The district municipality said the gathering reinforces its commitment to strengthening support for the agricultural community.

“By equipping farmers with knowledge and technology, the District Municipality will continue to cultivate sustainable growth and resilient agriculture for communities across the region,” the municipality said in a statement.

The event formed part of activities aligned with the Provincial World Food Day Programme, observed under the theme: “Hand in Hand for Better Foods and a Better Future.”

Stakeholders urged consumers to continue supporting local farming enterprises to help secure a healthy, sustainable food system and improved livelihoods for rural communities.
