NW father sentenced to 20 years for raping daughter

In a case that has shaken the community of Chaneng Village near Phokeng, a 66-year-old man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after being convicted of raping his then 18-year-old daughter. The decision was handed down by the Bafokeng Regional Court in Rustenburg on Thursday, a closure that many hope will serve as a reminder of the need for justice in cases of sexual violence.

According to Sabata Mokgwabone, spokesperson for the North West Provincial Police, the horrifying crime occurred in November 2022 when the accused, who should have been a figure of protection for his daughter, instead perpetrated a violent betrayal of trust. The victim was threatened with a knife, and the act was marked by an abuse of familial authority and love.

Despite pleading not guilty, the accused’s claims of consensual engagement were firmly dismissed by the court. The judge was persuaded by the compelling testimony of the victim, which was strengthened by supportive DNA evidence. This verdict underscores the importance of testimony and scientific evidence in the fight against sexual offences, particularly within the family unit where such betrayals can be most devastating.

Mokgwabone emphasised the significance of the verdict, noting that it stands as a testament to the unyielding dedication of law enforcement to keep communities safe. “It is crucial for those who commit such heinous acts to be held accountable,” he stated, reinforcing the message that justice will prevail in cases of family-based abuse.

This conviction comes at a time when South Africa continues to grapple with high rates of gender-based violence.
