The North West Department of Education has moved 281 Grade 12 learners and 10 teachers at Meriti Secondary School near Rustenburg to Swartruggens Gekombeneerde Skool in Swartruggens to write their remaining examination papers.
This after two learners were stabbed last week, in what is believed to be linked to gangsterism.
According to the department spokesperson, Mphata Molokoane, the learner was attacked by a gang of four individuals outside the school premises.
The gang, which included expelled and suspended former learners, stabbed the learner, and followed him into the school premises where they stabbed another learner.
Both learners were rushed to hospitals for medical treatment, one of the learners sustained four stab wounds and is currently recuperating at home.
Following the incident, the MEC for Education, Viola Motsumi convened an urgent meeting with School Governing Body and all stakeholders to address the matter.
“I am happy that finally learners of Meriti Secondary School will be able to write their remaining papers in a calm and peaceful environment.
Last week I met the parents, and I promised them that as a department we will ensure that the Grade 12 learners are provided with a quality space to write their final examinations.
As a department we have arranged meals which will be served three times a day to the learners.
They will be provided with accommodation which will allow them to study efficiently.
The learners will also be provided with 24 hours security,” said Motsumi.
Moreover, Motsumi announced that the Meriti Secondary School has been provided with four full-time security members, who will search learners in the morning and ensure they’re safety.
The decision to move the learners to an alternative centre, comes as they’re on Monday expected to write Life Sciences P2 at 09:00 and Visual Arts and Electrical Technology at 14:00.
