After a hard-fought contest in Algiers, where they narrowly defeated MC Alger 1-0 in the first leg of the CAF Champions League quarter-finals, Orlando Pirates now face the challenge of juggling their squad management as they prepare to travel to Limpopo. On Saturday afternoon at 3pm, they will take on the unpredictable Polokwane City, who are eager to build on their recent success following a 3-1 victory over Richards Bay.

The stakes are high for the Buccaneers, with the return leg against the Algerians awaiting them next Wednesday at the Orlando Stadium. This triumphant away goal by Mohau Nkota in the 65th minute, merely five minutes after he replaced Kabelo Dlamini, is critical in securing their position in the competition.

Tuesday’s match at the 5 July 1962 Stadium was fraught with tension, as the Algerians relentlessly attacked throughout. Nevertheless, Pirates demonstrated remarkable resilience, ultimately showcasing their composure and tactical discipline. Key defensive contributions from players like Mbekezeli Mbokazi and Nkosinathi Sibisi complemented the steady leadership of captain Tapelo Xoki, while Deano van Rooyen and Deon Hotto excelled on the flanks.

The match featured captivating duels, notably between Alger’s promising striker, 20-year-old Mohamed Bangoura, and the experienced winger Zakaria Naidji, who soon realised he was up against a seasoned opponent. Goalkeeper Sipho Chaine was called into action several times, making crucial saves, particularly in a nail-biting first half.

Central to Pirates’ midfield stability were Makhehlene Makhaula and Thalente Mbatha, who efficiently supported attacks and maintained pressure. Dlamini’s connections with ace forward Relebohile Mofokeng were pivotal in executing their game plan, ultimately leading to Nkota’s decisive strike that secured an invaluable away goal.

Remarkably, Orlando Pirates are the only club to have emerged victorious from their away match in the first leg of the quarter-finals, extending their unbeaten run to 11 matches in this season’s competition. Their performance in Africa has undoubtedly raised expectations ahead of their upcoming league fixture.

Polokwane City, however, presents a formidable obstacle. Just one point separates them from fellow contenders Stellenbosch FC and TS Galaxy, who are level on 35 points, adding to the significance of this encounter. Fans will undoubtedly be drawn to the drama as the Rise and Shine aim to continue their upward trajectory against the Buccaneers.
