Patrice Motsepe has been re-elected for the second term to be the President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), at the 14TH Extraordinary General Assembly held in Cairo,

His re-election was unanimous, and has been applauded for bringing stability, improving CAF’s global profile and its finances during his tenure which began back in 2021.

“Under his leadership, the organisation set several new records at the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Côte d’Ivoire 2023, attracting a record 1.4 billion viewers worldwide.

“Prize money for major tournaments, including the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League and TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, has also increased significantly, alongside enhanced financial support for Member Associations,” read a CAF’s statement.

Meanwhile, Motsepe expressed gratitude for his re-election.

“It’s an honour and a privilege and as I said, the achievements over the last few years have been because of all of us.

“This is about Africa and the people of this continent.

It has been a huge privilege for me to get exposed to each and every one of you because you represent the very best of the continent and the very best of the world.

“Thank you very much,” said Motsepe in his acceptance speech.

His reappointment has been widely welcomed with optimism of more victories regarding football development in the continent and the expansion of opportunities in the sports.
