In a thrilling contest that kept fans at the edge of their seats, Orlando Pirates triumphed over Stellenbosch FC, winning the MTN8 trophy for an unprecedented fourth consecutive time. The final, held at the picturesque Mbombela Stadium in Mpumalanga, saw the Buccaneers clinching the title with a decisive 3-0 victory, thanks to a stunning performance in extra time.

The match began with both teams demonstrating tactical brilliance and resilience, resulting in a tense stalemate after 90 minutes of regulation time. Despite the deadlock, it was evident that the Buccaneers were the more dominant side, creating a flurry of opportunities that were thwarted by Stellenbosch goalkeeper Stage Stephens. The shot-stopper was invaluable for his side, making crucial saves against fierce efforts from Thalente Mbatha, Sipho Mbule, and Relebohile Mofokeng during the first half.

As the second half progressed, Orlando Pirates continued to apply pressure, forcing Stephens into action again, notably denying a well-placed shot from Mbule. However, Stellenbosch began to find their rhythm and retaliated with attempts of their own. Devon Titus, Lehlohonolo Mojela, and Andre de Jong came close to finding the net, yet they too faced the formidable presence of Pirates keeper Sipho Chaine, whose acrobatics were equally vital in keeping the match level.

As the contest drifted into extra time, it was the tactically astute Pirates who made their mark first. Just two minutes in, super-sub Tshepang Moremi broke the deadlock, sending the Pirates fans into raptures. More fireworks followed as striker Tshegofatso Mabasa doubled the lead in the 110th minute, sealing the game’s fate. Moremi, who proved to be an impactful substitute, netted his second goal shortly after, cementing a stunning performance and the title for the Soweto giants.

This victory not only reinforces Pirates’ position as one of the dominant forces in South African football history but also marks a remarkable achievement for the club, as they became the first team to successfully defend the MTN8 trophy for three straight years. For Stellenbosch, it is a bittersweet outcome, having now faced the Buccaneers in back-to-back finals and finding themselves on the losing side once again.
