Orlando Pirates left it late in additional time to clinch a 1-0 win against arch-rival Kaizer Chiefs in the Betway Premiership match at the FNB Stadium on Saturday. The Soweto derby looked set to end in a 0-0 draw, until a “controversial” penalty was awarded to the Buccaneers, and converted by Patrick Maswangayi. The win ensured that the team reduce the gap between Pirates and log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns to three points. The loss leaves Chiefs rooted on fifth position, and nine points behind their Soweto neighbours. Amakhosi were left to rue their chances, including an early golden opportunity by Pule Mmodi to put them ahead, but instead allowed goalkeeper Sipho Chaine to recover from Pirates defence mistake to make a vital safe. The Buccaneers also had a clear chance to score in the first half through Relebohile Mofokeng, but his effort was thwarted by defender Ignacio Miguel. Despite many chances by both teams to take a lead, the scoreline was 0-0 at 90 minutes, and both teams looked set before Njabulo Blom was judged to have pulled Mofokeng’s shirt in the box deep into extra time. Maswanganyi bravely put the ball at the back of the net, to ensure that the Buccaneers secured the bragging rights. In other matches played on Saturday, Stellenbosch FC and Sekhukhune FC shared the spoils as the match ended 1-1 at the Danie Craven Stadium in Stellenbosch.Polokwane FC good run in the log continues, as the team beat Chippa United 1-0 at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane. At the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, Amazulu returned to winning ways, by beating struggling SuperSport 2-1 to secure the three points.
