The Northern Cape has witnessed a surge in police activity following a robust operation aimed at tackling serious criminal offences. In an intensive crackdown known as the Shanela operation, law enforcement agencies have arrested 191 suspects over the past week for a variety of crimes, including murder, rape, and attempted murder, as well as possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
The operation, which commenced on Monday, demonstrates the police’s commitment to making the province a safer place for residents. Among those arrested, several individuals have also been fined for operating illegal shebeens, contributing to the broader effort to curb unlawful establishments in the area.
Police spokesperson Timothy Sam highlighted the extensive measures taken during the Shanela operation, which included vehicle checkpoints (VCPs), stop-and-search procedures, foot and vehicle patrols, and compliance inspections targeting drug and other commodities smuggling. A total of 6116 vehicles and 11,499 individuals were stopped and searched as part of this thorough enforcement strategy.
These proactive actions reflect a coordinated effort among police units to maintain law and order, with various suspects set to appear in different magistrates’ courts throughout the province. “Our commitment to tackling crime and ensuring public safety remains steadfast,” Sam emphasised.
