In a significant development in the murder case of renowned musician and businessman Oupa Sefoka, known widely as DJ Sumbody, police have announced the arrest of prominent Gauteng businessman Katiso “KT” Molefe alongside three unidentified suspects. The arrests, which took place on Monday, signal a promising advancement in the investigation of a crime that shook South Africa’s entertainment industry.

DJ Sumbody was tragically shot and killed in November 2022, leaving fans and fellow artists mourning the loss of an influential figure. As authorities move forward, it is reported that Molefe, who has also been linked to another homicide, is believed to have orchestrated the killing, while the three others are suspected to be hired hitmen. Their imminent court appearance is highly anticipated as details continue to unfold.

The police investigation has been aided by the dedicated work of the Political Killings Task Team, which has remained operational despite attempts to disband it by Deputy National Police Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya in December 2024. Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, the national police spokesperson, provided insights into the collaborative efforts of Gauteng organised crime detectives and the task team. “Gauteng organised crime detectives worked on the case and later roped in the SAPS Political Killings Task Team to assist,” Mathe stated.

Authorities have indicated that the investigation is far from over; the suspects are now expected to face additional charges linked to a weapon that was reportedly used in the murder. “The weapon allegedly used in the commission of the crime was seized and has since been linked to other murders,” Mathe revealed, raising the stakes and the complexity of the case further.

In a commendation from National Police Commissioner Fanie Masemola, the importance of the combined efforts in unraveling the case was highlighted. “Well done to the teams that have been piecing together evidence since November 2022. This is a culmination of hard work and dedication to justice. This is one of those complex cases that our teams needed to take their time in ensuring a thorough investigation so that we could ultimately bring a strong case before court,” Masemola remarked.

All four suspects will appear before the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court tomorrow. The three hitmen and alleged mastermind are facing three counts of murder, these charges include the murder of DJ Sumbody and his two bodyguards, Sibusiso Mokoena and Sandile Myeza.

As the community and fans of DJ Sumbody await further developments, the arrests offer a glimmer of hope for justice in a case that has left many unanswered questions.
