The North West Province’s law enforcement has reported a notable stride in combating crime, with the execution of their latest initiative, Operation Shanela 2. Over the course of just one week, from Monday to Sunday last week, police conducted extensive operations that resulted in a staggering 1,105 arrests and the recovery of crucial evidence in the fight against criminal activity.

Police spokesperson Adéle Myburgh outlined the operation’s breadth, which encompassed a series of strategically executed roadblocks on all national and provincial arterial roads, meticulous tracing of wanted suspects, stop-and-search procedures, as well as compliance inspections at various liquor-selling outlets. These inspections led to the closures of several unlicensed liquor premises, addressing concerns over illegal alcohol distribution.

According to Myburgh, the operations yielded significant results in several crime categories. Among the arrests were:

  • 45 individuals apprehended for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • 4 suspects caught for illegal possession of firearms and ammunition
  • 195 arrests for drug possession
  • 38 individuals charged with illegal dealing in liquor
  • 163 arrests for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and common assault
  • 23 individuals charged with murder and attempted murder
  • 12 arrests related to burglaries at residential and business properties

This comprehensive approach illustrates the police’s commitment to enhancing community safety. The operations not only targeted high-profile crime but also aimed to curtail the underlying issues related to substance abuse and the illegal liquor trade.

Operation Shanela 2 reflects an essential partnership between law enforcement and the community as they strive toward a safer environment for all residents. These recent successes indicate a robust police presence and a proactive stance against crime, reassuring citizens of the ongoing efforts to enhance public safety in the North West Province.
