The Ministry of Police has sought to clarify some aspects of investigations in the rape case involving a 7-year-old minor, in Matatiele, Eastern Cape.
This came after the circulation of claims on social media, alleging that Police Minister Senzo Mchunu lied about taking the DNA samples of the girl’ school principal, where the incident allegedly took place.
Through a statement, the Ministry admits that although Mchunu revealed that DNA samples were conducted, he was not specific about whose DNA was taken.
“The Minister gave a comprehensive briefing on Friday, to take the nation into confidence on the investigation, wherein he mentioned that three persons of interest had been identified, and their samples taken for DNA analysis,” read the statement.
The department also assured that it is managing the case with utmost sensitivity and called on the public to refrain from spreading or sharing unofficial information, as it might have a detrimental impact.
Pressure continues to mount on SAPS and the Justice and Constitutional Department to bring those responsible for the gruesome act to book.
