Residents of an apartment complex in Amanzimtoti, located south of Durban, are reeling after a dramatic police shootout resulted in the death of Philangenkosi Makhanya, a key suspect in the murder of Olorato Mongale, a 30-year-old master’s student. The shocking incident unfolded as police pursued Makhanya, one of three individuals wanted in connection with the recent violent crime that has left the community distressed.

Makhanya was killed on Thursday during a confrontation with law enforcement agents, sparking fear and concern among the residents of the complex where the shootout occurred. Many have expressed their disbelief and anxiety over the extent of crime infiltrating their neighborhood.

Denise Rajman, the chairperson of the body corporate at the apartment complex, voiced her concerns regarding security measures in light of the incident. “I had the residents calling me, quite disturbed and worried, especially the women who reside alone,” she said. “It has raised alarms about who we allow in. Although we let residents in using a code, we cannot ascertain the identities of all visitors.” Rajman indicated that a comprehensive review of security protocols was necessary following the incident, highlighting the complexities of ensuring safety in today’s troubled environment.

The investigation surrounding Makhanya is part of a broader hunt for two additional suspects linked to the murder of Mongale. Authorities discovered Mongale’s body near Alexandria in Johannesburg last Sunday under circumstances that have drawn significant public attention.

KZN police have been active in their investigations, successfully tracing two other suspects to the areas of Phoenix and Kwamashu. As for the suspects travelling with Makhanya during the confrontation, police stated that they are also being questioned in connection to the murder case.

The shocking nature of this crime, alongside the police shooting, has left many residents wondering about their safety and the community’s security strategies.
