Politically connected businessman Oupa “Brown” Mogotsi survived an apparent shooting in Vosloorus, east of Johannesburg, on Monday night.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed that a case of attempted murder has been opened.

According to initial reports, at least eight shots were fired at a vehicle while Mogotsi was inside. He was not injured in the attack and is expected to provide a formal statement to investigators. Police forensic teams have been combing the scene for evidence and working to piece together a timeline of events.

Mogotsi’s name has often featured in high-profile investigations into alleged corruption and interference within the police service. Testimony and media reports have linked him to influence peddling and close ties with figures in the security cluster — matters that came under scrutiny during the Madlanga Commission.

Last month, police raided business premises associated with Mogotsi in the North West as part of ongoing investigations.

The latest incident adds a new dimension to the probes surrounding the businessman, whose proximity to senior officials has long raised concerns about political influence and the integrity of law enforcement.

Police have appealed to the public for witnesses and for any dashcam or cellphone footage that may help identify the suspects.

“No arrests have been made at this stage,” said Brigadier Mathe. “Investigations are continuing.”
