Polokwane City has handed defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns their first defeat of the Betway Premiership season by scoring a late goal at the Old Peter Mokaba stadium in Polokwane.

The reigning champions were not at their best for most of the encounter and were made to pay in the 82nd minute of the match when captain Bulelani Nikani put the ball in the back of the net from a free kick taken by Cole Alexander.

The results saw Sundowns drop to second place, while City climbed the ladder to 4th position.

In another match played on Sunday, Cape Town City were held to a 0-0 draw by newcomers Magesi at the Athlone Stadium.

Despite dominating the match, the host wasted several goal scoring opportunities as Magesi battled the rain to hold on to a valuable point.

The draw left the Citizens at 12th position ahead of Dikwena tsa Meetse on 13th position, thanks to a goal difference.

Meanwhile, Saturday’s encounters saw Chippa United defeat Golden Arrows 2-0 at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha, to move to third in the log.

The Chilli Boys goals were scored by Siphelo Baloni and veteran midfielder Andile Jali, who helped the team register their third win of the season, relegating Arrows to 10th place.

In an earlier encounter, it was sweet revenge for SuperSport United as they defeated Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 in a delayed match at the Peter Mokaba stadium in Polokwane.

United’s win came hardly a week after they were trounced 4-0 by Chiefs in the Carling Knockout and having lost the last matches both in the league and cup.

The valuable three points moved them to eight in the log ahead of Chiefs who found themselves in 9th position.

At the Harry Gwala Stadium in Pietermaritzburg, Royal AM finally registered their first win of the season after drawing four of their games, when they beat Sekhukhune United 2-0.

The win moved the team to six positions in the log, while United dropped to 7th in the log.

At the Dr Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein, Marumo Gallants held TS Galaxy 1-1, to help them stay away from the relegation zone.

Richards Bay and Stellenbosch FC played to a 0-0 draw at the King Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi.

Meanwhile on Friday evening, Orlando Pirates registered their fifth win of the season, when they beat Amazulu 2-1 in stoppage time at the Orlando Stadium in Soweto.

The win propelled the Buccaneers to the top of the log, while Usuthu remained opposite at the bottom of the log.
