Pope Leo has issued a heartfelt plea for peace, calling for an end to the “barbarity of war” following a devastating Israeli airstrike on the only remaining Catholic church in Gaza. The historic Holy Family Church compound in Gaza City was struck on Thursday, leaving three individuals dead and numerous others injured, including the parish priest.

Images emerging from the scene reveal the extent of the damage: the roof of the church has been severely compromised, with shots depicting the main cross marred and windows shattered. These haunting visuals underscore a tragic reminder of the growing toll the ongoing conflict is taking on places of worship and civilian lives.

Speaking to the faithful after his Angelus prayer, Pope Leo paused to read the names of those who tragically lost their lives in the incident, evoking a profound sense of grief and sorrow. His voice filled with emotion, he urged the international community to uphold humanitarian law in the face of escalating violence and to reaffirm the tenets of protection for civilians caught in brutal conflicts.

“I appeal to the international community to observe humanitarian law and respect the obligation to protect civilians as well as the prohibition of collective punishment, of indiscriminate use of force and forced displacement of the population,” he implored, embodying a spirit of compassion that rings ever louder in times of strife.

The Pope’s statement highlights an urgent call to action during a period marked by increasing tension and instability in Gaza, where the scars of war continue to deepen. As the international community grapples with these complex issues, his message serves as a poignant reminder of the humanitarian crises and the critical need for dialogue and resolution.

In an age where conflict has become a grim part of the narrative, Pope Leo’s words resonate as a beacon of hope, urging all parties involved to reconsider their roles and the human sacrifices being made. The loss of life, particularly in places of worship, points to a chilling trend that demands urgent attention and a steadfast commitment to peace.
