The Presidency of South Africa has issued a heartfelt appeal to citizens to identify and submit the names of individuals who have demonstrated exceptional patriotism or have made significant contributions on either a national or global scale. This initiative seeks nominees for the prestigious National Orders, acknowledged as the highest honours in the country.

President Cyril Ramaphosa, alongside Phindile Baleni, the Director-General in the Presidency and Chancellor of National Orders, will present these distinguished awards. The annual ceremony aims to promote inclusivity and social cohesion within the nation.

Baleni, in a statement, expressed the essence of the National Orders: “These awards are a platform for the recognition of fellow South Africans and persons globally who, in exceptional ways, have historically made or are currently making important or interesting contributions to all aspects of our national life.” She added, “From politics to popular culture, as well as the recognition of bravery, the National Orders give us an opportunity annually to be inspired by and grateful to people who have done outstanding things to shape our past and our future.”

This year, the National Orders encompass various categories designed to honour individuals for their contributions toward democracy and notable service to the country. The prestigious awards include:

  • The Order of Mapungubwe: Awarded to South African citizens for excellence and exceptional achievement.
  • The Order of the Baobab: Given to South African citizens for distinguished service beyond the ordinary call of duty, in fields like business and the economy, science, medicine, technological innovation, and community service.
  • The Order of the Companions of O.R. Tambo: This order is conferred to eminent foreign nationals for their friendship towards South Africa, embodying peace, cooperation, and solidarity.

The nomination period is open and will remain so until 31 August 2025. The date for the annual National Orders ceremony will be announced in due course, ensuring that supporters and advocates for change have ample time to put forward their nominations.

The National Orders stand as a reflection of the nation’s spirit, recognising the enduring impact of those who have dedicated their lives to bettering South Africa. As citizens ponder who among them fits the bill for these prestigious awards, they are invited to take part in a celebration of excellence that resonates well beyond the awards ceremony itself.
