President Cyril Ramaphosa has publicly congratulated Donald Trump on reclaiming the presidency after the 2024 election. Trump secured his comeback, triumphing over Vice President Kamala Harris, to resume the highest office in the United States, a position he previously held from 2017 to 2021.

Ramaphosa articulated his support through social media, stating, “Congratulations to United States president-elect @realDonaldTrump on your return to the presidency.” He emphasised the importance of maintaining “the close and mutually beneficial partnership” that has defined South Africa’s relationship with the U.S. This partnership encompasses multiple spheres, including economic collaboration, educational exchanges, and healthcare initiatives—areas vital to fostering global progress.

Ramaphosa also underscored the forthcoming G20 presidency in 2025 that South Africa will hold, shortly followed by the U.S. in 2026. This concurrent leadership offers a unique platform for both nations to collaborate on pressing international issues such as climate action, economic resilience, and health equity. Ramaphosa expressed his commitment to working hand-in-hand with Trump’s administration to advance shared goals within the G20 forum.

For South Africa, the United States represents a crucial trade partner, with bilateral trade totalling billions and significantly impacting sectors like agriculture, technology, and mining. Ramaphosa’s prompt congratulations demonstrate a commitment to sustaining strong U.S.-Africa relations, especially through the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), which allows eligible sub-Saharan African countries duty-free access to U.S. markets. The evolution of Trump’s presidency could be pivotal in the renewal and stipulations surrounding AGOA.

Moreover, South Africa perceives collaboration with the U.S. as vital in addressing pressing challenges within the African continent, including economic development, healthcare advancement, and infrastructure growth. Ramaphosa’s optimistic tone illustrates a hopeful perspective that Trump’s administration will continue its support for African nations, bolstering initiatives aimed at enhancing stability, prosperity, and democratic governance.

As Trump gears up to take office once more, the global political arena faces potential transformations that could reverberate through economic policies and climate commitments. Ramaphosa’s congratulatory remarks set a diplomatic tone, fostering an atmosphere rich in mutual respect and collaboration. The upcoming G20 leadership roles of South Africa in 2025 and the U.S. in 2026 herald an opportunity for both nations to spearhead global initiatives aimed at sustainable growth and robust health systems.

Ramaphosa’s encouragement of a constructive partnership with the U.S. reflects South Africa’s pragmatic stance on international relations, prioritising collaboration over conflict. As both countries anticipate their leadership responsibilities in the G20, Ramaphosa’s commitment to working closely with the U.S. suggests a future where South Africa and the U.S. can collectively address shared challenges on the world stage.

Trump’s return to the White House constitutes a crucial moment, not solely for U.S. domestic policy but for international partnerships dependent on U.S. involvement. Ramaphosa’s timely outreach signals South Africa’s intention to remain a steadfast ally, endeavouring to align on essential issues vital for both nations’ future stability and prosperity. This message of solidarity signals promising prospects for the next chapter in U.S.-South Africa relations, anchored in common interests and a dedication to advancing global progress.
