Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader, Julius Malema, there was no effort on the part of African National Congress (ANC) President, Cyril Ramaphosa, to save Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni and Tshwane metropolitan municipalities.

He was speaking during a media briefing in Johannesburg on Thursday, to give an update on the EFF’s approach to local government.

For the first time since South Africa started holding democratic local government elections, the ANC is not governing any metro in Gauteng.

“Cyril Ramaphosa the president of the ANC never bothered to talk to anyone because he thought he got this thing sealed. He was not worried about anything,” Malema told journalists.

“How can a president when metros are going, the biggest part of what is your constituency is going… someone must tell me what did Ramaphosa do to save the metros?,” he asked.

Malema said former president Jacob Zuma’s Radical Economic Transformation group helped the ANC retain eThekwini Metro.

“It is Zuma, Ace [Magashule] who negotiated eThekwini and won eThekwini. RET forces are the ones that were fighting there,” Malema told journalists.

Mxolisi Kaunda was re-elected eThekwini Executive Mayor on Wednesday night in Durban.

Malema insists there is no coalition agreement between his party and the Democratic Alliance (DA).

Malema said the EFF only voted with the DA to ensure that the African National Congress (ANC) loses the three metropolitan municipalities in Gauteng.

He said more than 1000 EFF councillors have been sworn in in several municipalities.
