President Cyril Ramaphosa will announce this year’s national and provincial elections date within 15 days from Thursday.

This was announced by the presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya, during a media briefing in Cape Town, ahead of Thursday’s State of The Nation Address (SONA).

There had been speculation by many that Ramaphosa will announce the election date during SONA, but according to Magwenya, the announcement is not part of the president’s address.

“If you count from Thursday, the president will announce the elections date, within 15 days as of Thursday.

The president will proclaim soon after the announcement, so there shouldn’t be a lag between a time he announces and the time he proclaims.

All depends on his schedule on that day which he will announce, but often we don’t have a huge lag between the announcement and the proclamation,” said Magwenya.

Contrary to many expectations, Magwenya highlighted that there was no agreed timeline of when the date will be announced, and dismissed insinuations that the President was deliberately delaying the polls date.

“There’s no crisis insofar as the election date.

There’s anticipation, there is excitement, rightly so, we are a democracy,” highlighted Magwenya.

According to Magwenya, there must be an allowance of 90 days to finalise preparations between the time the date is proclaimed and the actual date of elections.

Magwenya said the date of the elections cannot be part of SONA, as the address different and unique in its own ways.

“I think it’s important that it is allowed its own expression, and that South Africans can take out of it the celebratory element of it and remember we are marking 30 years of our democratic dispensation.

“I think it’s important that it is allowed its own expression, and that South Africans can take out of it the celebratory element of it and remember we are marking 30 years of our democratic dispensation.

It is also the last SONA under the sixth administration, and so what you would have is a reflection over the past 30 years and with an account of the work of the sixth administration in the last five years,” said Magwenya.

The President, in his capacity as Head of State and government, will deliver the annual SONA at 19:00, before a joint sitting of the National Assembly and the National Council of Provinces.

President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to announce the date for the 2024 national elections within 15 days of the State of the Nation Address, which is to be delivered tomorrow evening.

“We look forward to the President delivering the State of the Nation Address tomorrow at 7pm. It will be the administration’s seventh – in a year which marks 30 years since Parliament ushered in the democratic dispensation,” Presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said.

Addressing the media at the Imbizo Media Centre in Cape Town earlier today, Magwenya urged all South Africans to follow tomorrow’s address as it deals with the state of the nation, not only the state of one segment or some segments of the nation.
