Police in Soweto have confirmed that two Rea Vaya bus drivers were shot and killed in two separate incidents at Protea Glen in Soweto, last night.

Police said the motive for the shootings is unknown at this stage, and that they’re investigating cases of murder.

“In the first incident, it is reported that the driver had stopped a robot along Wildchestnut street in Protea when he was shot and killed by unknown suspects.

On the second incident at Tshithuthune Street, the eyewitness reported that he was the last passenger on the bus when he heard gun shots and took cover.

After it got quiet, he realised that the driver was shot, he tried to drive the bus but crashed into a wall,” said Gauteng police spokesperson, Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi.

She said the driver was declared dead on the scene and the passenger sustained no injuries.

Meanwhile, the bus service has since suspended its operations following the incidents.

“Rea Vaya Passengers are advised that buses are temporarily suspended until further notice due to shooting incidences to bus drivers that happened last night in Soweto.

We advise passengers to use alternative public transport.

Regular updates on the situation will be given,” read a statement from the company.
