Residents warned of heatwave

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned of severe heatwave in the central and western half of the country.

This includes Free State, North West, Northern Cape, Limpopo, Gauteng and that some areas recorded higher temperatures over the weekend. 

Heatwave conditions with persistently high temperatures are expected over the eastern parts of the Northern Cape, North West, Free State, Gauteng, central and northern interior of the eastern cape until Tuesday. 

Also, over Gauteng and south-western Bushveld in Limpopo where these conditions are likely to persist into Wednesday,” warned the SAWS on its X account.

The service also warned of “extremely hot and uncomfortable conditions are expected in places over the Namakwa District of the Northern Cape, the West Coast District and interior of the Western Cape.”

Meanwhile, the City of Tshwane has warned residents to take precautionary measures during this extreme conditions. 

“It is against this backdrop that the City calls on residents to be aware of adverse effects that may be caused by extended exposure to extreme heat weather conditions. 

The effects may include dehydration, heat exhaustion in severe circumstances as well as heat stroke. 

Residents are also advised to remain cautious of the increased risk of veld fires during this period,” said the municipality spokesperson, Lindela Mashigo.

The municipality urged residents to take various measures during this period such as staying hydrated by drinking water, limiting outdoor activities, wearing loose clothing and avoiding dark-coloured clothing where possible, remaining in the shade where possible, keeping an eye on vulnerable individuals, ensuring that children and/or animals are not left in parked vehicles and avoiding strenuous physical activity if possible.

The SAWS said these conditions are expected to persist until Wednesday.
