As Riveiro closes the door on one of the most successful spells in recent Pirates history, fans are left to ponder what the future holds for both the coach and the club.

In a night filled with emotion and triumph, Spanish coach José Riveiro led the Orlando Pirates to a resounding 3-0 victory over Golden Arrows at the Orlando Stadium, marking his final game with the club. As the Pirates faithful cheered and celebrated, Riveiro reflected on his journey from humble beginnings to managing one of Africa’s most storied teams.

Rumours are swirling that the 47-year-old is set to trade the Pirates for Egyptian giants Al Ahly, just in time for their participation in the highly anticipated FIFA Club World Cup next month, hosted in the USA. However, Riveiro chose not to confirm his next chapter when questioned about it post-match.

As he addressed the media, Riveiro shared insights into his remarkable transformation from a low-level coach to the helm of a club as iconic as the Pirates. “I’m not perfect, I’m not an angel,” he admitted. “I’m calm and composed, and I try to be as reasonable as possible.” With the wisdom gleaned from years of experience, he expressed gratitude towards the opportunities that have shaped his career, saying, “I had a curious life in many ways.”

Starting his coaching career in the depths of the lower divisions in his home country, Riveiro has ascended to notable successes in South African football, clinching five domestic trophies during his three-year tenure with the Buccaneers. “That process humbles you and teaches you how difficult it is to achieve things in life when you start from the bottom,” he explained. “So, if you are thankful and appreciate all of those things, then you can manage to be the way I am.”

His departure from the Pirates is bittersweet; the Spaniard leaves behind a legacy of resilience and hard work, emphasising that his achievements were the result of dedication rather than luck. “I’m not here because I won the lottery,” he stated, highlighting the tenacity required to reach the pinnacle of any profession.

The victory against Golden Arrows served as not only a fitting farewell but also a reminder of the heights the Pirates have reached under Riveiro’s guidance. His commitment to the club, the players, and the supporters will undoubtedly be sorely missed as he embarks on the next chapter of his career.
