After 5721 episodes as of 26 December 2023, Mzansi has bid farewell to 23-years-old Afrikaans soapie, 7de Laan. The brainchild of Danie Odendaal made its debut on SABC back in April 2000.

The programme documented and followed the lives of residents in and around the community of 7de Laan in the suburb of Hillside, Johannesburg, with its dialogue primarily in Afrikaans.

For more than two decades the show captured the hearts of millions of South Africans by reflecting on society’s differences, struggles and diversity.

The show was lauded for its ability to delicately handle contentious topics that include race, with empathy. In a social media post, 7de Laan crew, actors and all stakeholders thanked South Africans for their unwavering support.

“The outpouring love and backing from South Africans has truly overwhelmed us over the years. From on screen to behind the camera, every person dedicated tireless efforts to make 7de Laan one of South Africa ‘s most iconic shows. South Africa thank you for welcoming us to your homes for 23 remarkable years,” read the post.

The show brought to life characters such as Oubaas, Hilda, Aggie, Paula and the Meintjies family who all became widely loved and celebrated by viewers in many households.

Back in July the SABC and Danie Odendaal Production announced that the soapie will not be recommissioned for another season. Fans took to X to reflect on their decades of experience watching the show.

“I have watched this show from episode one and now it’s ending, like I’m not ready to say goodbye yet! #7delaan,” one fan wrote.

“I’m 25 and I have watched this soapie since I was 8. I’ll always miss it. What an emotional last ever episode,” commented another.

7de Laan won the South African Film and Television Award for Best Soapie determined by public vote in 2010, 2011 and 2014.
