As the festive season continues, the South African Police Service (SAPS) has urged members of the public to exercise heightened caution following an increase in reported drink-spiking incidents involving both men and women. Several of these cases have resulted in victims being robbed or, in severe instances, killed.
According to SAPS, most of the reported incidents occurred in Gauteng and the North West. Spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe explained that criminal syndicates often use young women to identify and lure potential victims in clubs, taverns, concerts, and other entertainment venues that serve alcohol.
“The syndicate monitors these women and assists them in identifying possible targets inside the establishment. Once a victim’s drink is spiked, the syndicate swiftly moves in to rob them, often taking their vehicles, cellphones and any money in their possession,” Mathe said. She added that in some incidents, female victims were found assaulted or murdered.
Mathe encouraged the public to prioritize their safety by adopting simple precautionary measures.
“Always inform someone you trust about where you are going and when you plan to return. Never leave your drink unattended, avoid drinking and driving, limit your alcohol intake and stay hydrated. Also ensure that you have reliable transport arrangements to and from your destination,” she advised.
SAPS assured the public that officers remain on high alert and issued a stern warning to those planning to commit such crimes.
