The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned about an intense cut-off low system, associated with severe and extreme winter weather, across most parts of the country until next week.

“The service warned that the extreme conditions will start this weekend, with snowfalls possible over all provinces, except Limpopo.

Early on Saturday morning, this system will begin affecting the Western and Northern Cape.

By Monday, 9 June 2025 and Tuesday, 10 June 2025 this extensive and severe winter weather system will have shifted further east over South Africa, affecting the central and eastern provinces,” read a statement from SAWS.

In addition, the service said only Limpopo province will be spared from the significant and dramatic drop in temperatures.

Farmers have also cautioned to take precautionary measures, to protect their livestock from the bitter cold and windy conditions.

Some of the more extreme weather impacts associated with this system include snowfalls over almost every province, except for Limpopo, strong, damaging surface winds over large parts of the interior provinces from Sunday, strong to near-gale coastal winds and very rough seas.

“There is also a risk of severe thunderstorms, possibly associated with damaging hail and/or damaging winds over some provinces, including North West, Gauteng, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal during Monday and Tuesday,” explained the statement.

Meanwhile, the SAWS has warned that thousands of runners participating in the Comrades 2025 Marathon on Sunday from Pietermaritzburg to Durban, expect mild to warm and windy conditions, with partly cloudy to cloudy skies.
