Police have nabbed a second suspect in connection with the killing of 49-year-old Rustenburg businessman, Ben Gumbi.

Gumbi was gunned down in broad daylight by two unknown males in August at a coffee shop at the Rustenburg CBD.  The suspects fled the scene in a blue Volkswagen Polo car which was found shortly after the incident at the corner of Helen Joseph and Lourie streets.

North West Police spokesperson, Colonel Adel Myburgh attributed the apprehension to collaborative efforts of a multidisciplinary team.

“The team consisting of Hillbrow Tactical Response Team (TRT), Rustenburg Crime Intelligence and Rustenburg Detectives, led to the arrest of another suspect in Johannesburg on Thursday evening, 16 November 203, for the alleged murder of Ben Gumbi,’’ said Myburgh.

The 29-year-old suspect is expected to appear before Rustenburg Magistrates’ Court on Monday on a charge of murder.

Meanwhile, the case against the first suspect, Sibongiseni Ngubani was postponed to 09 January 2024, after the state successfully opposed his bail application.

Ngubani was arrested in September in Germiston when he was appearing for a different case of armed robbery in which he was out on bail of R3000.

The provincial commissioner of police in the North West, Lieutenant General, Sello Kwena welcomed the arrest of the second suspect.
