Since Qatar’s summer weather is too extreme for football, the 2022 World Cup will be a Winter World Cup. It is the first time in the Middle East and only the second time in Asia that the tournament will be held. For the two most iconic names in the game’s history, one Cristiano Ronaldo and one Lionel Messi, it may be the last dance on the big stage. Off the pitch, hosts Qatar have been under scrutiny over several human rights violations and the treatment of the LGBTQ+ community.
