South Africa’s sprint sensation Akani Simbine has done it again, by winning the 100m race at the Rabat Diamond League in Morocco. The 31-year-old clocked 9.95 seconds, just outside his season’s best of 9.90 seconds, to claim three out of three in the Diamond League this season. Kenyan sprinter Ferdinand Omanyala finished second in a time of 10.05, while USA’s Fred Kerley was in third in a time of 10.07.

“Very comfortable race happy with it, happy with how I executed, and happy to finish off the race injury free.I feel great, I feel confident, I am happy that I could take the win today and that I can finish this month strong and healthy. Another sub-ten in the bag, so slowly we go down in time which is great,” said Simbine.

Simbine said he’s looking forward to the next race, the Rome Diamond League on 6th June. The athlete has been globetrotting in the past three months, having participated in Botswana, China, Atlanta, and Morocco.

Despite this, the Paris 2024 Olympic Games medallist said he’s not weary, as he’s on excellent form. “I’ve been racing the whole of May, haven’t got enough training, and now was like do I carry on or not. But the body is still strong and healthy, we’re here to do the 100m race and win. It’s just a mental thing, if you can get your sleep, you can prioritise your rest, just make sure that your preparations are good enough to push you through, it should be good. I have a strong team behind me, they make sure I’m healthy and ready to race, I’m on the line, which means I’m ready to race, I listen to them, and I trust them,” explained Simbine.

The athlete said he’s going back to his training base in Italy, to get some valuable rest ahead of next month’s Rome Diamond League.
