Residents of Khutsong in the West Rand who are currently receiving medical care at the West Clinic, have been advised to use alternative clinics from 1st May 2025, as the clinic will be closed indefinitely due to a sinkhole.
According to the Gauteng Department of Health, the ongoing geotechnical challenges caused by active sinkhole activity in the Khutsong West area, are posing serious safety risks for both healthcare users and staff members. Some parts of the area are prone to sinkholes as they’re built on high-risk dolomite land, and the local municipality has had to relocate the most affected residents to safer areas.
“The safety and well-being of the community and employees remain the department’s high priority. Patients who previously accessed services at Khutsong West Clinic are advised to visit any of the nearby facilities for uninterrupted primary healthcare services which are within 6km radius from Khutsong West Clinic,” said the department spokesperson, Motalatale Modiba.
Due to the looming closure of the clinic, residents have been urged to use the Khutsong Community Health Centre, Khutsong South clinic, Khutsong Extension 3 clinic, Khutsong East clinic, and Welverdiend clinic.Modiba has urged patients to provide valid documents and inform staff at the alternative clinic that they used to received medical care at the Khutsong West Clinic. He said this will ensure seamless continuity of care and will enable linking the patients with their medical records for medical care.
“In addition, the Ward-Based Primary Health Care Outreach Teams will continue to operate and provide services in the Khutsong West area to reach those who may have difficulties accessing alternative facilities. The current staff at Khutsong West Clinic will be re assigned to the nearby health facilities. The department understand that this closure may cause inconvenience to the affected community. However, this decision was taken to prevent potential harm and ensure that services continue in a safe environment,” explained Modiba.
