Authorities in Limpopo are investigating the cause of the fatal accident that claimed the lives of six awaiting trial inmates and a police officer.

The accident happened after a collision between a heavy motor vehicle and a police van, on the R101 road between Mokopane and Mookgophong in the Waterberg District.

Limpopo Transport and Community Safety MEC, Susana Mathye said she is saddened by the tragic accident, which resulted in the temporary closure of the road. “Our heartfelt condolences go to the families of the deceased. Our thoughts also go to the injured, and we wish them a speedy recovery. We are aware that five individuals were injured and are receiving medical attention at various health facilities.The circumstances surrounding the accident are still under investigation, and we urge all parties involved to exercise caution and patience as the investigation unfolds,” said Mathye following her visit to the accident scene.

Furthermore, Mathye said the department will continue to work closely with other law enforcement agencies to ensure that the provinces roads are safe for all users.

“We appeal to drivers to exercise caution and adhere to road safety rules to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future. May the souls of the departed rest in peace, and may we find strength in the face of this tragedy,” remarked the MEC.

Meanwhile, the road has since been cleared and opened for traffic.
