South Africa solidified their position at the top of Group D in the Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 with a commanding seven-wicket victory over New Zealand on Saturday, maintaining their perfect record with three wins from three matches.
The Proteas, led by an unbeaten 86 from captain Aiden Markram, chased down New Zealand’s 175-7 with 17 balls to spare at the Narendra Modi Stadium. This triumph follows their earlier successes: a 57-run drubbing of Canada and a thrilling double Super Over win against Afghanistan.
Marco Jansen was the star with the ball for South Africa, claiming 4-40 to restrict the Black Caps, who had looked set for a bigger total after a blistering start. New Zealand, also unbeaten prior to this clash with victories over Afghanistan and UAE, now face a must-win scenario against Canada to secure their Super 8s berth.
Jansen’s Pace Dismantles New Zealand’s Top Order
Inserted to bat first, New Zealand exploded out of the blocks, racing to 33-0 in four overs thanks to aggressive knocks from Finn Allen (31 off 17) and Tim Seifert (13 off 9). However, Jansen’s introduction sparked a dramatic collapse.
The towering left-arm seamer dismissed Seifert caught behind, then struck twice in the sixth over to remove Allen and Rachin Ravindra (13 off 8). Spinner Keshav Maharaj (1-24) added to the woes by bowling Glenn Phillips for just one, leaving New Zealand reeling at 64-4 after seven overs.
A fighting 74-run partnership for the fifth wicket between Mark Chapman (48 off 26, including six fours and two sixes) and Daryl Mitchell (32 off 24) revived the innings. But Jansen returned to break the stand, inducing a miscue from Chapman to backward point.
The Kiwis slumped further, losing three wickets for seven runs, before Jimmy Neesham’s unbeaten 23 off 15 – capped by two boundaries off the final two balls from Corbin Bosch (1-34) – lifted them to a respectable 175-7.
Markram’s Masterclass Seals Comfortable Chase
South Africa’s reply was explosive from the outset, with Markram and Quinton de Kock (20 off 14) plundering 62 runs in just 28 balls. De Kock, who crossed the 3,000-run milestone in men’s T20 internationals during his cameo, fell to a slower ball from Lockie Ferguson (1-33).
Ryan Rickelton (21 off 11) and Dewald Brevis (21 off 17) provided quick support, but Markram dominated proceedings. The skipper raced to a 19-ball fifty – the joint-second fastest by a South African in T20Is – and finished unbeaten on 86 from 44 deliveries.
David Miller (24 not out off 17) applied the finishing touches, smashing Ferguson for a six over midwicket to seal the win in 17.1 overs. Ravindra (1-9) was the only New Zealand bowler to claim a wicket in the chase.
Super 8s Implications
This result extends New Zealand’s dismal record against South Africa in T20 World Cups to 0-5. The Proteas can confirm their Super 8s spot with a win over UAE in Delhi on Wednesday (5:30am UK time). Alternatively, they could qualify as early as Monday if Afghanistan defeats UAE, or Tuesday if Canada beats New Zealand in Chennai.
New Zealand, meanwhile, are favored to advance with a victory over Canada but could still progress even in defeat, depending on net run rate and other results.
South Africa’s all-round display underscores their status as tournament contenders, blending potent bowling with destructive batting. As the group stage nears its climax, all eyes will be on the remaining fixtures to determine the Super 8s lineup.
