The South African government has reiterated that the safety and return of 17 South African citizens currently in Russia remains a top national priority, as diplomatic engagements with Russian authorities continue. The group was reportedly taken to Russia last month after being allegedly recruited by MK Party member Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla.

According to reports, the men were promised specialised security training, allegedly to serve as party bodyguards. However, these claims have since been contradicted by developments on the ground.Government officials have confirmed that the South Africans are now stationed on Russian front lines, sparking serious concerns about their safety and overall well-being.

Addressing the media in Pretoria on Monday, Presidency spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said the government is in ongoing talks with authorities in both Russia and Ukraine, with a particular focus on Russian officials. “They are in a dangerous environment and are facing grave danger,” Magwenya said.

“We are still in discussions with various authorities, both in Russia and in Ukraine, to see how we can free them from this situation. The emphasis at this stage is primarily on the authorities in Russia.”

Magwenya stressed that efforts to bring the group home have not been abandoned and are being handled at the highest level of government.

“This matter remains a priority for the government and the President. It is receiving the highest possible attention within our government,” he added.

The situation continues to draw public scrutiny as investigations into the alleged recruitment and circumstances surrounding the men’s deployment remain ongoing.
