In a heartfelt announcement that has touched the hearts of many, Springbok captain Siya Kolisi and his wife Rachel revealed on Tuesday that they are parting ways after a significant period of contemplation. The couple shared their decision through a joint statement on Instagram, emphasising that the choice to end their marriage comes from a place of mutual love, respect, and understanding.
“This decision comes from a place of love, respect and understanding that this is the best path forward for both of us,” they wrote, affirming their commitment to co-parenting their children with the same devotion they have always shown. “While our relationship as a couple is changing, we remain great friends and committed partners in raising our children with the same love and care they’ve always known.”
Kolisi, who made headlines this year as captain of the victorious Springbok team at the 2023 Rugby World Cup, and Rachel have been a prominent couple in South Africa since their explosive wedding in August 2016. Their glamorous ceremony took place amidst the serene backdrop of Molenvliet Wine Estate, with a guest list that included rugby stars like Tendai “Beast” Mtawarira and his wife, Kuziva Makore.
The couple first crossed paths in May 2012 at a dinner party following a rugby match at Newlands Stadium. Over the years, they built a life together that included the birth of two children and the adoption of Kolisi’s younger brother and sister after the passing of his mother. Their family unit has always been a testament to their shared values and commitment to nurturing their children together.
In a significant chapter of their lives, the family moved to Paris in January when Kolisi signed a contract with Top 14 side Racing 92. However, just months later, they opted to return to South Africa after Kolisi cancelled his contract to rejoin the Sharks, a decision influenced by his aspiration to participate in a fourth Rugby World Cup in 2027.
Despite their separation, the Kolisis are committed to continuing their work with the Kolisi Foundation and urged their supporters for understanding during this transitional period. “We are grateful for the love, understanding and support you’ve shown us, and we kindly ask for your respect as we navigate this transition,” they stated.
