World champions South Africa have been placed in Pool B alongside Italy, Georgia and Romania for the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia, a draw that hands the Springboks a realistic chance of progressing deep into the knockout stages as they chase an unprecedented third consecutive title.

The Springboks, who lifted the Webb Ellis Cup in Japan (2019) and France (2023), have previously beaten all three of their 2027 pool opponents at World Cup tournaments, but head coach Rassie Erasmus has stressed there will be no complacency.

“We’re pleased with the pool, but this is a World Cup – every team will bring enormous passion and pride,” Erasmus said. “Italy showed this year what they’re capable of when they get it right. Georgia and Romania are exceptionally physical sides who punish you if you give them space and momentum. We know from experience how tough they can be.”

The expanded 24-team tournament, the first of its kind, features six pools of four. The draw was conducted in Australia on 3 December 2025 and was based on the final 2025 World Rugby Rankings.

2027 Rugby World Cup pools in full:

  • Pool A: Australia (hosts), New Zealand, Chile, Hong Kong China
  • Pool B: South Africa, Italy, Georgia, Romania
  • Pool C: Argentina, Fiji, Spain, Canada
  • Pool D: Ireland, Scotland, Uruguay, Portugal
  • Pool E: France, Japan, USA (2031 hosts), Samoa
  • Pool F: England, Wales, Tonga, Zimbabwe

The top two teams from each pool and the four best third-placed sides will advance to a Round of 16.

The tournament will run from 1 October to 13 November 2027 across seven Australian cities. An exclusive ticket presale window opens on 18 February 2026.
