The Gauteng Department of Health said health services are continuing as normal at some of its facilities in Tshwane, which experienced extensive damages due to Tuesday’s night storm.

The department said no patient or staff members at these facilities were injured because of the damages caused by the storm.

The facilities are the Odi District Hospital in Mabopane, Sedilega Clinic in Mabopane, Block TT Clinic and KT Mutubatse Clinic which are both in Soshanguve.

“The extent of the damage at Odi District Hospital include a collapsed ceiling in one of the sections of the hospital and the roof, which has caused leakages in some wards. Part of the hospital’s palisade fence has also been damaged due to the heavy storm.

“The extent of the damage at the three primary healthcare facilities include damage to the roof and ceiling, which has resulted in the wards being waterlogged,” said the department spokesperson Motalatale Modiba.

He highlighted that because of the storm, the dysfunctional storm water channels are also flooding the clinics.

Officials from the Infrastructure Unit in the Department have since been dispatched to the facilities, to assess the damage to institute immediate measures to ensure that health services are not affected further.

Modiba however warned that due to the weather forecast predicting more heavy rains this afternoon, it is difficult to estimate timelines to refurbish the facilities.

“However, the department is committed to ensuring that contractors are deployed to these facilities from Wednesday to commence with further damage assessments which will inform the scope of the refurbishments,” explained Modiba.
