In a dazzling display of skill and determination, Tazmin Brits’ fifth ODI century of the year steered South Africa to a six-wicket victory over New Zealand in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025. The match, held at the Holkar Stadium in Indore on Monday, marked the Proteas’ first triumph in the tournament, as they chased down a target of 232 with relative ease.

The day’s performances were highlighted by a stellar bowling effort from Nonkululeko Mlaba, who claimed four wickets for 40 runs. This performance was pivotal in restricting New Zealand to 231 all out in just 47.5 overs. Sophie Devine’s resilient 85 was the standout contribution for the White Ferns, but it wasn’t enough to lift her side, who remain in search of their first win in the tournament.

Particularly noteworthy was the record-breaking 159-run partnership between Brits and Sune Luus, a testament to their batting prowess and ability to handle pressure. As they effortlessly accumulated runs, the pair not only surpassed the previous World Cup record for South Africa but also provided the foundation for an emphatic victory.

South Africa’s innings got off to a rocky start when captain Laura Wolvaardt fell LBW to Jess Kerr early on. However, Brits and Luus quickly stabilised the innings, ticking the scoreboard over with aggressive intent. Brits reached her fifty—a blistering 51 runs off just 44 balls—highlighting her influential role in the chase.

The duo’s perseverance paid off as they raced past 103 runs, setting a new benchmark for South African partnerships in World Cup history. With Luus notching up 81 not out, the Proteas reached their target in 40.5 overs, despite a slight wobble with the departure of both Marizanne Kapp and Anneke Bosch in quick succession.

Amidst personal milestones, Marizanne Kapp became the most-capped player in South African women’s cricket ODIs, marking her 350th international appearance. In a show of remarkable resilience, she even dismissed Suzie Bates for a first-ball duck, adding further narrative to a match filled with personal achievements.

As New Zealand’s innings crumbled towards the end, losing their last seven wickets for a mere 44 runs, South Africa’s confidence grew. Mlaba’s breakthrough deliveries coupled with exceptional catches, including a stunning effort from Anneke Bosch, dismantled the White Ferns’ batting order.

With this victory, South Africa not only celebrates a crucial win but also reinforces their status as a formidable contender in the ongoing World Cup. As the tournament progresses, eyes will be on Brits, whose remarkable year continues to shine, alongside a deadly bowling attack led by the likes of Mlaba.
