African National Congress (ANC) leader, Thandi Modise, has warned people against boycotting elections and reminded them of the pain and sacrifices that ensured that democracy is attained.
She was speaking in Mahikeng after casting her vote on Monday. Several communities in the North West have been advocating for an election boycott because of lack of services, but Modise – who’s also Defence Minister – said staying away from voting undermines the sacrifices many made to free South Africa from apartheid.
“I myself I’m angry. I have had no pleasant words for Mahikeng. But if you don’t vote, you also don’t help us determine and verify the numbers of eligibility. You also can by default allow the very same thing that angers you to stay. When you vote, you vote because you want your voice heard. We don’t even care whether you vote for the ANC or not, just exercise the right we fought so hard for you.
“We were non-people. But now we can exercise this, which enables us to run countries, municipalities and provinces. Never take advantage of the opportunity to cast your vote. You must always remember where it comes from,” Modise said.
She said she hopes voters would give the ANC a chance to rectify its mistakes.
“You may have seen us making the ANC councillor candidates take a pledge. It is the only party that has done so. We will not tolerate corruption. We will not tolerate people who become councillors and then move away and stay in other areas. We are very clear, we will not tolerate mayors who absolutely have no clue of their jobs. As the party we are ready to deal with all our challenges. You will have not wasted your voice if you trust the ANC with your one more vote,” she said.
