The City of Tshwane promises to prioritise Mamelodi flood victims and to invest millions in township development

Member of the Mayoral Committee responsible for finance, Peter Sutton says the City of Tshwane will prioritise the relocation of members of Eerste Fabrieke and other communities referred to as Mamelodi flood victims this year. 

Shacks belonging to this community were swept away during the flood in 2019 and at the time the government promised to expedite their relocation amid safety concerns but that never happened.

Last year, the residents were affected by floods yet again prompting the City of Tshwane Municipality to make yet another commitment to relocate them.

Now, Sutton said the National Treasury has committed to reallocate R285 million to buy land earmarked for the relocation process. 

“The Mamelodi flood victims will be relocated in the next financial year. As part of the process, the City had to approach the National Treasury with a request to reallocate the R285 million for the Pienaarspoort land acquisition for the purpose of this relocation.The City has received written confirmation from the National Treasury that this has been granted,” said Sutton.

The following township were also identified for infrastructure projects to ensure service delivery: 

1. In Soshanguve, the city will  invest R42,6 million for • roads and stormwater upgrades in Extension 19, Block FF Area 4 and Block L 

• the construction of a 10 km 132 kV overhead power line for Block Jj
• sewer and water reticulation to 80 stands in Block MM;
• the completion and handover of 16,43 km of roads and stormwater infrastructure
• in Extension 12 and 13 
• a project to address the flooding backlog in Block WW.

2.  Winterveld, the city will invest R16,6 million in preparation for –

• a concrete canal;
• water reticulation; and
• roads and stormwater.

3.  Mamelodi, the metro will  R88,6 million for –

• water reticulation for 512 stands in Mamelodi Extension 6, Phomolong;
• sewer reticulation for 532 stands in Phomolong;
• the development of Mamelodi hostels;
• addressing flooding backlogs;
• water and sanitation services installation of 984 m of steel pipe in Extension 11;
• the upgrade of Buitekant Street; and
• work at Denneboom Depot and the Denneboom Intermodal Facility.

4.  Pretoriuspark, the city will invest  R3,4 million in preparation for –

• water and sewer provision.

5.  Refilwe Manor, the city will invest R17,3 million for –

• the completion of electrical and mechanical fittings at sewer pump stations;
• water provision in Extension 7 and 10;
• the construction of sewer reticulation for 400 stands and water reticulation to 30
• stands in Extension 7 and 10; and
• roads and storm water in Extension 9 and Refilwe.

6. Fort West, the city will invest R4,1 million for –

• sewer provision in Extension 4 and 5;
• the construction of roads and stormwater;
• a bulk reservoir; and
• water provision in Extension 4.

7. Olievenhoutbosch, the city will invest R30,7 million for –

• the construction of roads and stormwater; and
• the construction of a bulk water pipeline of 1,5 km in Extension 60.

8. Ga-Rankuwa, the city will invest  R8,1 million for –

• the construction of roads and stormwater;
• water provision in Extension 10;
• sewer reticulation; and
• internal roads in Zone 4 and 5.

9. Mabopane, the city will invest R21,5 million for –

• Mabopane Extension 2;
• the flooding backlog in Extension 1;
• upgrading 1 km of roads in Block A;
• water provision in Extension 12;
• 3 km of road resurfacing in Extension 1; and
• resurfacing internal roads in Block R.

10. Zithobeni, the city will invest R57,1 million for –

• a bulk water line in Extension 8 and 9 for a bulk water connection and completion of 809 stand connections;
• sewer provision; and
• roads and stormwater.

11. Gatsebe, the city will invest R4 million for –

• water and sewer reticulation.

12. Saulsville, the city will invest R2 million in preparation for the –

• development of Saulsville hostels, a project which is long overdue.

13. Mahube Valley, the city will invest R13 million for –

• storm water drainage; and
• the interchange, which will see the completion of the work of the bus layover.

14. Stinkwater, the city will invest R500 000 to address the flooding backlog. In Rama City, we will invest R7 million for –

• sewer provision and the completion of pipe jacking and 1 608 stands. 

15.  Eersterust, the city will invest R6,4 million for –

• the flooding backlog; and
• the replacement of 3,1 km of water pipes.
