Member of the Mayoral Committee responsible for finance, Peter Sutton says the City of Tshwane will prioritise the relocation of members of Eerste Fabrieke and other communities referred to as Mamelodi flood victims this year.
Shacks belonging to this community were swept away during the flood in 2019 and at the time the government promised to expedite their relocation amid safety concerns but that never happened.
Last year, the residents were affected by floods yet again prompting the City of Tshwane Municipality to make yet another commitment to relocate them.
Now, Sutton said the National Treasury has committed to reallocate R285 million to buy land earmarked for the relocation process.
“The Mamelodi flood victims will be relocated in the next financial year. As part of the process, the City had to approach the National Treasury with a request to reallocate the R285 million for the Pienaarspoort land acquisition for the purpose of this relocation. The City has received written confirmation from the National Treasury that this has been granted,” said Sutton.
