In addition to demanding President Ramaphosa’s resignation, the party is leading a march against rolling blackouts and a failing economy.

Targeting important national issues is what Julius Malema has urged his party members to do.

In response, the government has sent out nearly 3,000 military and police personnel to keep the peace. On Sunday night, students in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, started to protest, but the police intervened and dispersed them while making a few arrests.

There was a significant level of security in the Johannesburg region, with vehicles from the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department posted on street corners.

Demonstrators were setting a few fires in Soweto in the meantime, but there was little sign of widespread disorder or incidents.

There have been 87 protesters detained since the early hours of this morning.
