The Gauteng Department of Health (GDH) has appointed an independent investigator to probe allegations of corruption and maladministration levelled against the CEO of Kalafong Hospital in Pretoria Dr Sello Matjila after workers downed tools and disrupted services at the hospital demanding the removal of Matjila.
GDH said in a statement released on Sunday saying it has removed Matjila and appointed Dr Lebohang Mpshe as an acting CEO pending an investigation into all allegations made by various stakeholders at the facility..
“In the meantime, the hospital CEO Dr Sello Matjila will not be reporting to the facility. Dr. Lebohang Mpshe has been appointed as the Acting CEO while the department addresses the grievances,” said the acting Head of Department Arnold Malotana
Earlier this week, a spokesperson for all the labour unions at Kalafong Hospital, Vusi Masemola accused Matjila of flaunting the processes and demanded he vacate the office because of various issues that workers have raised with management..
“The other issue is the PMDS[ performance management and development system]. They have actually issued the papers where they say people are no longer qualifying for the PMDS. Initially people were known to have qualified but at the last minute the CEO issued the letter stating that those people don’t qualify anymore.
“We also want the retraction of the leave without pay that was imposed on one of our shop stewards. We also want the precautionary suspension of some of the sister unions. Some of the comrades were actually intimidated using those intentions to precautionary suspension,” said Masemola pointing out that workers have lodged complaints of “poor management” and corruption against the hospital CEO.
The Gauteng Department of Health said operation are back to normal
“We are happy that things are back to normal and we are expecting services to run uninterrupted as we have successfully engaged all the concerned stakeholders within the hospital,” said Malotana
