Blade Nzimande, minister of higher education, science, and innovation, has been prohibited from placing Unisa under administration by the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria.

At least not in the near future, the government will not take control of the University of South Africa.
This follows the institution’s council’s successful attempt to prevent Blade Ndzimande, the minister of higher education, from taking over the institution’s management.

Earlier this week, the minister cited a recent report that found gross mismanagement at UNISA as the basis for placing the organisation under administration.

The Council of Unisa approached The High Court of South Africa ( Gauteng Division, Pretoria) on an urgent basis and succeeded with the presiding officer ordering Ndzimande to among others;

  1. “ withdraw the Notice forthwith upon the granting of this order;
  2. “ immediately cease and desist from taking any steps to publish and implement the Notice or to take any steps of whatsoever nature to implement the Notice;

Ndzimande was not available for comment.
