The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has announced its withdrawal from attending the South African Football Association’s (SAFA) Indaba Ordinary Congress this weekend.
SAFA are hosting a workshop/Indaba of the Association’s Regional Members, which is to be followed by an Ordinary SAFA Congress on Sunday 23 of April, however, the PSL’s National Executive Committee (NEC) said it will not attend due to reasons not revealed.
In an official statement, the PSL confirmed that its ExCo met on Thursday for their monthly meeting and unanimously decided to withdraw.
“The executive committee discussed the agenda circulated by the South African Football Association for a workshop/indaba of the association’s regional members, set for the 21/22 April, which is to be followed by an Ordinary SAFA Congress on 23 April,” the statement said.
“The executive committee unanimously resolved that the PSL would not attend the workshop/indaba or the Ordinary SAFA Congress.”
The PSL has also announced that they will seek an audience with the Minister of Sports and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) president on a way forward.
“The Executive Committee delegation will seek an urgent audience with the Minister of Sports, Arts, and Culture; the President of CAF; and the stakeholders that support professional football. Then call an extraordinary meeting of the PSL Board of Governors to report on the matter.”
Amongst the issues on the agenda during the Indaba include the PSL coaches’ qualifications.
SAFA technical Director Walter Steenbok said they need to be stricter, and this is to ensure that the 32 PSL clubs comply with the CAF Club Licensing requirements.
The PSL’s non-appearance at the SAFA event only adds to the brewing tension between the two stakeholders.
