Three people have died, and 12 others have been injured after a bus plunged off a more than 50m bridge in Maidstone Road in Tongaat, KwaZulu-Natal. According to the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI), the victims are three women from Ward 62, Burbreez, Tongaat. The road has been closed, traffic has been directed to other roads, and authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution in the area.
“Our Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) has informed us that the bus driver experienced break failure.
“He tried to avoid the traffic, veered off the road and plunged off more than 50m of bridge.
“An investigation into the roadworthiness of the bus will be conducted in conjunction with Road Traffic Management Corporation, SAPS and RTI.
“The victims were traveling to work having departed at 06h00 from the main bus stop,” said the MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma.
The MEC also expressed his deepest condolences to the families of the victims and wished those injured a speedy recovery.
In addition, Duma urged motorists to be patient as the scene is still active and the process to save the injured and the recovery processes are underway.
“Old Main Road North Coast and other roads in the area such as Gopalall Hurbans Road have been affected,” explained Duma.
