In a devastating incident that has left the Johannesburg community in mourning, a bus travelling northbound on the R21 crashed at the R24 split, resulting in the tragic loss of twelve lives, comprising nine men and three women. The accident has blocked a crucial interchange leading to OR Tambo International Airport, disrupting traffic and raising concerns about safety on one of the city’s busiest routes.
According to Ekurhuleni disaster and emergency management spokesperson, William Ntladi, the bus “jack-knifed and rolled several times,” indicating the severity of the crash. Eyewitness accounts describe a scene of chaos as emergency services rushed to the site to attend to the victims and clear the wreckage. The wounded have been swiftly transported to nearby hospitals for treatment, though the extent of their injuries remains unconfirmed.

The crash occurred at a critical juncture, not only for local commuters but also for those travelling to and from OR Tambo International Airport, a major gateway into and out of South Africa. As a result, Ntladi urged motorists to avoid the R21 if possible, as all lanes remain closed while emergency operations continue. “The scene is ongoing, and more information will follow later,” he stated, emphasising the importance of road safety amidst this heart-wrenching tragedy.
The incident has shocked residents and prompted calls for a review of road safety measures in the area to prevent similar occurrences in the future. City officials are expected to conduct investigations to ascertain the cause of the accident and implement necessary precautions moving forward.
