Two people have been killed and several others injured in a multi-vehicle accident on the M1 Northbound, just before the Glenhove Road off-ramp in Johannesburg on Sunday.
The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) says some victims may still be trapped in the wreckage. Emergency services are on the scene, and the road has been closed to traffic.
JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla confirmed that three vehicles were involved in the crash.
“JMPD is currently on the scene of a severe multi-vehicle accident on the M1 Northbound before the Glenhove Road off-ramp in Houghton Estate. Three motor vehicles are involved. Regrettably, two fatalities have been confirmed on site. JMPD officers are present, and Fire and Rescue services are en route to assist with reported entrapment in the wreckage,” said Fihla.
The M1 North is completely closed at 11th Avenue, with all northbound lanes blocked to allow emergency responders to carry out rescue operations and accident investigations.
Motorists have been advised to avoid the M1 North between 11th Avenue and Glenhove Road, as heavy traffic delays are expected in the surrounding Houghton and Melrose areas.
Alternative routes include Oxford Road, Louis Botha Avenue and Jan Smuts Avenue.
Authorities say the roadway is expected to remain closed for some time while the scene is cleared. Motorists are urged to drive with caution, yield to emergency vehicles and follow the instructions of JMPD officers at diversion points.
