Two suspects have been taken in for questioning after vehicles believed to have been used in a cash-in-transit robbery in Roodepoort were recovered at a house in Meadowlands, Soweto.
Gauteng Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni confirmed that a man and a woman were found inside the house where a white BMW and a Nissan Hardbody bakkie suspected to be getaway vehicles were discovered shortly after the robbery.
“The two suspects were found inside the house where the vehicles believed to have been used in the commission of the crime were recovered. They are currently being questioned as part of our ongoing investigation,” said Mthombeni.
He further said that both vehicles were hijacked prior to the robbery. The BMW was hijacked in Gauteng, while the Nissan Hardbody bakkie was hijacked in the North West province.
The cash-in-transit heist occurred on Saturday, 10 January on Elias Motsoaledi Road in Roodepoort.
Has said a cash-in-transit armoured vehicle travelling with an escort vehicle was rammed head-on by a white “Mercedes-Benz coming from the opposite direction, causing the armoured vehicle to overturn.”
Mthombeni said additional suspects then joined the scene, where the armoured vehicle was bombed while others exchanged gunfire with a security officer in the escort vehicle.
The suspects allegedly disarmed three security officers who were inside the armoured vehicle and fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash. The Mercedes-Benz used to ram the cash vehicle was set alight before the suspects escaped in two BMWs and a Nissan Hardbody bakkie.
A swift response by various South African Police Service units in Gauteng, working with Gauteng Traffic Police and private security, led to the recovery of one BMW and the Nissan Hardbody bakkie at the Meadowlands property.
Police say investigations are continuing, with the search for additional suspects and the recovery of the stolen cash still under way.
