“I didn’t think I would.”

This was the reaction given by South Africa’s Pop and Amapiano artist, Tyla, as she wept on stage after winning three out four of the awards, she was nominated for at the MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs) in Manchester, Britain.

Tyla scooped the Best African Act, Best R&B and Best Afrobeats categories.

She managed to outshine some of the biggest global industry names like Kehlani, Usher and SZA under the Best R&B nominations.

The 22-year-old described her win in that category as a validation, especially because she was wearing an outfit inspired by R&B icon, Aaliyah, which she wore at the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards.

“I know it’s just so hard to categorise my music.

I mix so many different genres into one, but R&B is a huge influence on my music.

Especially Aaliyah, she’s like one of my idols.

The fact that I’m even winning this in her dress is like…Oh my God,’’ Tyla beamed with excitement.

Her success and undeniable talent continue to receive recognition both in Mzansi and the international stage.

Her latest EMAs add to an extensive list of two BET Awards, one Grammy, an MTV VMA and four SAMA awards amongst others.
