The United States military says it destroyed 16 Iranian vessels identified as mine‑laying boats near the Strait of Hormuz on March 10, following concerns that Iran might deploy naval mines in the strategic waterway. The narrow strait is a major global energy route, with around one‑fifth of the world’s seaborne oil and gas passing through it.

U.S. Central Command released video footage showing strikes on several of the vessels, which officials described as part of an effort to prevent mines from being placed in the shipping corridor. President Donald Trump had earlier warned Iran against deploying mines and said that any such action would draw significant military consequences.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has said it would use missiles and submarines to counter U.S. and allied naval movements in the area. Recent disruptions to maritime traffic have raised international concerns about impacts on energy markets and global shipping.

In related developments, three merchant ships were struck by unidentified projectiles in waters near the strait on March 11. One vessel caught fire and was evacuated, while others sustained minor damage. These incidents occurred amid heightened tensions, with Iran threatening to block oil exports if attacks on its territory continue.

Investigation Into Strike on Iranian School

A preliminary U.S. military investigation has concluded that an apparent missile strike on a girls’ elementary school in Minab, southern Iran, on February 28 was likely caused by a U.S. missile, resulting in the deaths of at least 150–175 people, most of them children. The inquiry suggests that outdated targeting information may have contributed to the strike, which hit the Shajarah Tayyebeh school near a military compound.

Officials briefed on the investigation told reporters that video evidence and weapon fragments indicate a Tomahawk missile — a type used by U.S. forces — struck the area. The Pentagon has described the investigation as ongoing, and has emphasised that deliberate targeting of civilians is against U.S. policy.

President Trump initially disputed U.S. responsibility for the strike, attributing it to Iranian forces, a claim that has not been supported by independent military sources.

Regional and International Context

The clashes in and around the Strait of Hormuz take place amid a broader escalation of hostilities between Iran and U.S.‑led forces, which has disrupted maritime traffic and contributed to volatility in global oil markets. Diplomatic efforts to de‑escalate the situation are ongoing, though both sides have issued firm warnings.
